A hot topic in the world of online video these days is freebooting. If you haven’t heard of it before, not to worry, I didn’t know what it was either 10 minutes ago. In short, it’s copyright infringement.
Urban dictionary defines freebooting as ‘Taking online media and re-hosting it on your website. Engaged in piracy or plunder. Mean-spirited swashbuckling of the internet age.’. One of the biggest sites where this re-hosting is taking place is Facebook and it has content creators up in arms. (Rightfully so, if I may add).
There is a great article written by Hank Green called ‘Theft, Lies, and Facebook Video’ that I recommend you read. You can also find Facebook’s response here. The video below also summarises the topic quite nicely.
